Two Metre Tall
Farmhouse Ales & Ciders
Way back in 2004 Ashley & Jane chose to move their young family across the world from southern French vineyards to a 580 ha farm in the Derwent Valley in southern Tasmania with a dream of growing vines and making wine. Instead they discovered a rich hop growing history and embarked on a project of ale instead, using ingredients from their farm, this valley and from across Tasmania.
The farm is integral to the business. The ales and cider they brew and ferment in the converted shearing shed would be a different beast should they have chosen instead an inner city warehouse. The farm gives a sense of place, connected to land and to ingredients they grow themselves and source from other Tasmanian farmers too.
The old shearing shed was converted to house the brewery in 2008. The brewhouse itself was originally the St. Ives brewery in Battery Point, Hobart, installed back in the late 1980s. Rehoused on the farm, the old kettle & tanks are lovingly nurtured to life to help on their journey to find a unique estate brewed beer.
At Two Metre Tall they brew a range ales available throughout the year. Brewed of mixed and wild fermentation, these ales will develop acidity and complexity as they age. Ensure you take note of the neck label that includes a host of detail about the particular brew you have in your hand. This includes brew & bottling dates, ingredients (including hop varietal detail), and tasting notes specific to your batch. The brew date is the important detail to note as it will provide an indication of where your bottle is in time and suggests what you may expect. The older the brew the more you are in for a treat of developing acidity and souring complexity.
